Official Competition Rules & Submission Agreement

Official Rules Date: October 7, 2026 · Version 2026-10-07

Your story. Your rights.

Submitting an original full-length feature screenplay or original short story does not transfer your copyright, does not give Midas an option, and does not give Midas permanent control of your material.

  • Your story remains yours.
  • Entering the competition does not give Midas an option.
  • Semi-finalist: no competition-created exclusivity.
  • Finalist: a 90-day exclusive negotiation period, beginning only after you separately accept finalist status.
  • Grand prize winner: a 180-day exclusive negotiation period, beginning only after you separately accept grand prize winner status. That period replaces any remaining finalist period.
  • Any actual option, acquisition, development, production, financing, or other rights require a separate written agreement.
  • If no agreement is signed before that period ends, and there is no written extension, the competition exclusivity ends on its own.

By checking the competition acceptance box and submitting an entry, you agree to be legally bound by these Rules and the Competition Submission Release & Acknowledgment. Account use is also covered by the Terms of Use. Handling of account and script information is covered by the Privacy Policy.

1. Competition administrator

The Midas Story Discovery Script Competition Series (the "Competition") is publicly presented under the Midas Entertainment / Midas Story Discovery brand.

The Competition is administered by Midas Management Group Inc., 13337 South St. #553, Cerritos, CA 90703, (562) 573-3183, [email protected].

Midas Management Group Inc. is an affiliated entity of Midas Entertainment Group Inc.

"Midas" may refer, as the context requires, to Midas Management Group Inc., Midas Entertainment Group Inc., Midas Story Discovery, and their authorized officers, employees, contractors, readers, judges, representatives, service providers, and affiliated entities.

You acknowledge that Midas Management Group Inc. is the entity responsible for administering and operating the Competition.

2. Agreement to these Rules

By entering the Competition, the individual submitting the material ("Entrant" or "Writer") agrees to these Rules.

You represent that you have had the opportunity to review these Rules before paying the entry fee and submitting material.

Acceptance of these Rules applies only to Competition participation and the limited rights expressly described here. Competition entry does not itself grant Midas an option, purchase right, ownership interest, or permanent exclusive right in your material.

Separate terms apply to optional Coverage Services. Separate affirmative agreements also apply if you are later invited to accept finalist status or grand prize winner status.

3. Eligibility

The Competition is open only to individuals who are 18 years of age or older at the time of entry and who have the legal capacity to enter into these Rules.

Participation is void where prohibited or restricted by applicable law. You are responsible for complying with applicable laws, tax obligations, contracts, and other restrictions.

Some states do not allow an entry fee for a skill contest. The Competition is therefore not open to residents of Colorado, Maryland, Nebraska, North Dakota, or Vermont. An entry from a resident of one of those states is void, and Midas will refund its entry fee.

Midas may request reasonable documentation to verify eligibility, identity, authorship, ownership, authority, or compliance. Failure or refusal to provide it may result in disqualification.

4. Competition cycles

The Competition is scheduled to operate on a recurring basis. All times are Pacific Time. Midas platform records control when an entry, payment, acceptance, or revision was received.

  • 18 Finalists announced: October 15, 2027
  • 6 Genre Winners and Grand Prize Winner announced: October 29, 2027

5. Categories

The Competition includes Horror / Thriller, Comedy, Action, Drama, Sci-Fi / Fantasy, and Animation.

You select the genre you believe best fits the submission. Midas may correct an obvious category error or place a submission in the category it reasonably determines is most appropriate. That administrative step does not guarantee advancement and does not change the subjective nature of judging.

6. Entry types and page counts

Eligible entry types are original full-length feature screenplays and original short stories only. Short screenplays and other formats are not accepted.

An original full-length feature screenplay is 61 pages or more. An original short story is 60 pages or fewer.

Page counts are determined from the submitted document as reasonably interpreted by Midas and the platform. Midas may reject, reclassify, or request correction of a submission that materially fails the category.

7. Entry fees

Original full-length feature screenplay

  • Regular entry fee: $50
  • Late entry fee: $90

Original short story

  • Regular entry fee: $30
  • Late entry fee: $70

Late pricing begins at the date and time stated for that cycle. Late prices are the total entry price. They are not a surcharge added to the regular fee.

Entry fees are separate from optional Coverage Services. Payment purchases participation in that cycle only. It does not purchase favorable judging, advancement, feedback, representation, development, financing, acquisition, production, or any other industry result.

Entry fees are final and non-refundable except where a refund is expressly required by applicable law.

8. Coverage services are separate

Midas may offer optional Coverage Services: AI Coverage at $15 per uploaded script, and Professional Human Coverage at $200 per uploaded script. Those purchases are governed by the Coverage Services terms presented at purchase.

Professional Human Coverage is provided by a qualified creative professional selected, approved, contracted by, or associated with Midas.

Coverage is not required to enter. Buying AI Coverage or Professional Human Coverage does not affect eligibility, judging, scores, rankings, advancement, semi-finalist selection, finalist selection, genre winner selection, grand prize selection, or any representation, development, acquisition, financing, or production consideration.

9. Revisions

You may upload revised versions through the final submission deadline. No additional entry fee is required merely to replace the entered version before that deadline. The latest version successfully received before the deadline is the final competition version.

You are responsible for confirming the correct file uploaded. After the deadline, Midas is not obligated to accept revised pages or replacement files. Buying coverage does not extend the revision deadline.

10. Competition structure

Eligible submissions may undergo a preliminary evaluation. Submissions selected to advance enter the semi-final round.

The Competition is intended to select 18 finalists, three per genre across the six genres, then 6 genre winners and 1 grand prize winner.

Midas may make reasonable administrative adjustments when submission volume, disqualifications, ties, technical issues, insufficient eligible entries, or other circumstances affect administration.

11. Judging

This is a skill-based creative writing competition. Submissions are evaluated by subjective creative judgment. Factors may include storytelling, concept, structure, characters, dialogue, originality of execution, pacing, voice, emotional impact, entertainment value, genre execution, craft, commercial or production potential, and overall reader response. Not every factor receives equal weight.

Each eligible competition entry is reviewed by three human readers. Entries meeting the split-score review threshold are flagged for an additional read or review under the competition’s judging process.

Midas may use different readers at different stages. Scores, notes, rankings, deliberations, internal communications, and reader identities need not be disclosed.

Every score, advancement decision, and winner is decided by human judges or readers using the factors above. No winner or placement is chosen by random draw or other element of chance, and no automated system or AI model scores, ranks, or selects entries. If entries are tied, human judges break the tie by further review.

12. Subjective decisions

You acknowledge that screenplay and story evaluation is inherently subjective. Reasonable readers may disagree. Disagreement with a score, placement, or failure to advance does not establish error, bad faith, copying, discrimination, breach of contract, or a right to a refund.

Judging and advancement decisions are final, except that Midas may correct clerical, mathematical, technical, eligibility, duplicate-record, category, or other genuine administrative mistakes.

13. Originality and ownership warranties

Submissions must be original works created by you or, for a jointly written submission, by you and the identified co-writers. The Competition does not accept work based upon, adapted from, derived from, or dependent upon pre-existing stories or intellectual property owned or controlled by someone else.

You represent and warrant that:

  • the work is original to you and any identified co-writers, and you own and control it;
  • it is not an adaptation, remake, sequel, prequel, spin-off, continuation, dramatization, or other derivative work based on third-party or pre-existing intellectual property;
  • it is not based on a book, article, screenplay, film, television program, comic, graphic novel, stage play, podcast, video game, song, character, franchise, or other pre-existing creative property owned or controlled by someone else;
  • Midas does not need a third-party license or underlying-rights clearance in order to evaluate it as an original competition submission;
  • you have authority to submit it, and participation does not violate any agreement binding on you;
  • the submission does not knowingly infringe a third party's copyright or other intellectual-property rights.

Midas may request reasonable documentation of originality, authorship, ownership, or eligibility. A submission that does not meet the original-work requirement may be rejected or disqualified. Disqualification on that basis does not entitle you to a refund.

14. Co-writers

If a submission has more than one writer, the person who submits it represents that they have authority from all co-writers and co-owners to submit the material, accept these Rules, communicate with Midas, pay fees, and administer competition participation.

All co-writers must meet the age and eligibility requirements. The submitting writer is responsible for ownership, credits, fees, prize allocation, and approvals among the writing team. Midas is not responsible for disputes among co-writers.

Before any later development, option, acquisition, production, financing, or shopping agreement, Midas may require signatures from everyone with material rights in the project.

15. Original works only

This Competition is intended to discover original material. Work based on pre-existing stories, characters, franchises, or other intellectual property is not eligible.

Having access to, or the ability to obtain, underlying rights does not make a non-original project eligible. Midas may disqualify a submission it reasonably determines is materially based on or derived from pre-existing third-party material, whether or not you believe those rights could be cleared.

16. No conflicting agreements

You represent that entering and granting the limited permissions in these Rules does not violate any other binding agreement.

If the work is subject to an existing option, shopping agreement, exclusive submission agreement, attachment, development agreement, acquisition agreement, representation agreement, financing restriction, court order, or other restriction, you must still have authority to participate. Tell Midas promptly if your rights or authority materially change.

17. You keep ownership

You retain ownership of the submitted work. Creating an account and entering the Competition do not transfer copyright to Midas.

Submitting material does not, by itself, assign copyright, sell the work, create an option, create a shopping agreement, transfer adaptation rights, grant production rights, grant permanent exclusivity, or obligate you to enter a future transaction with Midas.

Midas receives only the limited permission reasonably necessary to receive and store the submission, administer the Competition, review and evaluate it, give authorized judges and readers access, communicate with you, verify eligibility, administer advancement and prizes, keep reasonable competition records, and perform the other obligations in these Rules.

Except for those limited purposes, and any separately accepted finalist or grand prize terms below, you retain all rights in the material.

18. No exclusivity for entrants or semi-finalists

Entry creates no competition-based exclusivity. Advancement to the semi-final round also creates none.

Unless you have a separate agreement that affects the project, you remain free to submit it elsewhere, seek representation, financing, or production partners, and negotiate options, acquisitions, shopping agreements, or other opportunities.

Competition-created exclusivity begins only if you are one of the 18 finalists and you separately and affirmatively accept finalist status.

19. Finalist status requires a separate acceptance

Selection as a finalist does not, standing alone, activate exclusivity. A selected finalist will be offered a separate finalist acceptance. You must affirmatively accept before the finalist exclusivity provisions apply.

If you do not accept within a deadline Midas reasonably communicates, you may decline or forfeit that status, subject to reasonable administrative discretion. Entering the Competition is not advance acceptance of finalist exclusivity.

20. Finalist: 90-day exclusive negotiation period

When your separate acceptance of finalist status becomes effective, Midas receives a 90-calendar-day exclusive opportunity to negotiate concerning the submitted project. The period begins on the date that acceptance is recorded by Midas's electronic acceptance system or a separate signed agreement.

During those 90 days you agree not to grant another person rights inconsistent with that exclusive opportunity to negotiate regarding development, option, acquisition, packaging, shopping, financing, production, or other exploitation of the submitted project.

The finalist acceptance and the 90-day period are not an option agreement. You continue to own the material. Midas does not obtain ownership, copyright, production rights, acquisition rights, or an automatic right to exploit the project because you accepted finalist status.

Any option, purchase, acquisition, development, shopping, financing, production, licensing, or exploitation agreement must be a separate written agreement.

If no separate written agreement is signed and there is no mutually agreed written extension, the competition-created finalist exclusivity ends when the 90 days end. No separate release or reversion document is required.

21. Grand prize winner status requires a separate acceptance

Selection as grand prize winner does not, standing alone, grant Midas additional rights. You will be asked to separately accept grand prize winner status.

Competition entry and finalist acceptance are not advance acceptance of the grand prize negotiation period.

22. Grand prize winner: 180-day exclusive negotiation period

When your separate acceptance of grand prize winner status becomes effective, Midas receives a 180-calendar-day exclusive negotiation period concerning the submitted project. It begins on the date that acceptance is recorded.

The 180-day period supersedes and replaces any shorter finalist negotiation period still remaining. It does not run in a way that shortens the 180 days.

During those 180 days you agree not to grant another person rights inconsistent with Midas's exclusive opportunity to negotiate regarding development, option, acquisition, packaging, shopping, financing, production, or other exploitation of the submitted project.

Grand prize acceptance is not an option agreement. You continue to own the material. No ownership, copyright, acquisition, production, financing, distribution, or exploitation rights transfer because you accepted grand prize winner status. Any such arrangement requires a separate written agreement.

If no separate written agreement is signed and there is no mutually agreed written extension, the competition-created grand prize exclusivity ends when the 180 days end. No separate release or reversion document is required.

23. No obligation to develop, acquire, or produce

Neither entry nor advancement obligates Midas to represent you, develop, option, purchase, or acquire the submission, secure financing, attach talent, shop, produce, or distribute the project, introduce you to third parties, or enter any further business relationship.

Except during a separately accepted finalist or grand prize negotiation period, you have no obligation to enter a further business relationship with Midas.

24. Similar material

Midas and its affiliated companies are active in film and television. They may already possess, receive, develop, acquire, independently create, or later encounter projects with ideas, themes, concepts, premises, plots, characters, settings, genres, or other elements that resemble your submission.

Similarity alone does not mean your work was copied and does not, by itself, create a right to compensation, credit, ownership, or participation.

Nothing in these Rules authorizes unlawful copying of legally protectable expression, or waives your rights concerning that copying.

25. No confidential or fiduciary relationship

Unless Midas separately agrees in an express written agreement, competition submissions are not submitted in confidence.

Entry does not create a confidential relationship, a fiduciary relationship, an agency, management, employment, partnership, or joint-venture relationship, a representation agreement, an attorney-client relationship, or any other special relationship not stated in these Rules. Receiving and evaluating a submission does not create one.

This section does not authorize disclosure or use of submitted material that is inconsistent with the Privacy Policy or another binding contract.

26. Your work and artificial intelligence

Midas does not use submitted screenplays, stories or other creative material to train or fine-tune generative AI models, and will not sell uploaded scripts or stories to third parties for AI training.

Midas may use third-party technology, cloud, storage, security, document-processing, and artificial-intelligence providers as reasonably necessary to operate the Competition, process submissions, provide services you request, maintain the platform, secure data, or provide separately purchased AI Coverage.

Where those providers process submitted material, Midas intends to use providers and contracts reasonably compatible with the Privacy Policy and the Coverage Services terms. Those providers’ processing is described separately and is not a grant of rights to train generative AI models on your material for Midas’s own model development.

Midas may offer an optional tool that drafts a logline and synopsis from your script using an AI model Midas runs itself. The tool is available to every entrant and has no effect on judging. If you use it, you are responsible for reviewing and editing the logline and synopsis you submit, and the warranties in these Rules apply to them as to the rest of your entry.

27. Publicity for advancing entrants

By accepting designation as a semi-finalist, finalist, genre winner, or grand prize winner, you grant Midas permission, subject to applicable law, to publicly identify you in connection with the Competition.

That may include your name, project title, category, advancement status, city and state or general location if you provided it for publicity, an approved biography, an approved photograph or likeness, and competition-related quotes you voluntarily supply. Midas may use this on its websites, social media, press, and competition announcements.

This permission does not transfer ownership of your screenplay or story. Midas is not required to publish the complete work as ordinary competition publicity.

28. Prizes

Grand prize winner

The grand prize winner receives a $1,000 total cash award and potential consideration for a shopping agreement and/or development agreement with Midas Entertainment Group Inc.

If the grand prize winner is also a genre winner, the $1,000 award replaces the $500 genre award. The awards are not cumulative. The grand prize winner receives $1,000 total in cash, not $1,500.

Potential consideration for a shopping or development agreement is not a guarantee that Midas will offer or enter one. Any such agreement must be separately negotiated and signed. The 180-day negotiation period is governed by sections 21 and 22.

Genre winners

One genre winner may be selected in each of Horror / Thriller, Comedy, Action, Drama, Sci-Fi / Fantasy, and Animation. Each genre winner receives a $500 cash award, unless that writer is then selected as grand prize winner, in which case the $1,000 grand prize replaces the $500 award.

Finalists

Selection as one of the 18 finalists is a competition distinction. It does not include a separate cash prize unless the finalist is a genre winner or the grand prize winner. There is no separate second-place or third-place cash award.

General prize terms

Cash prizes are paid to the legally entitled recipient after any eligibility, identity, tax, or other reasonable verification Midas requires. Where a winning submission has multiple writers, those writers decide how the cash is divided. Midas is not responsible for that dispute.

You are responsible for taxes and other governmental requirements arising from a prize. Prizes do not transfer ownership and do not themselves create an option, shopping agreement, development agreement, acquisition, or production agreement.

29. No refunds

All competition entry fees are final and non-refundable, except as stated in section 3 for residents of excluded states, in section 35 if Midas cancels a cycle or category, or where a refund is expressly required by applicable law.

That applies if you withdraw, change your mind, submit an incorrect file, select the wrong genre, become unavailable, are ineligible, fail the original-work requirement, are disqualified, fail to advance, disagree with a result, receive another opportunity, enter another transaction, or have a technical problem that starts with your equipment, connection, browser, file, email, or payment method.

Optional Coverage Services are separate purchases governed by their own terms.

30. Withdrawals

You may request withdrawal by contacting Midas at [email protected]. Withdrawal does not entitle you to a refund, credit, or rollover.

Midas will use reasonable efforts to stop further competition consideration after a withdrawal is processed. Withdrawal may not reverse reading, scoring, evaluation, or advancement announcements already completed.

If you withdraw after accepting finalist or grand prize winner status, withdrawal from judging does not automatically end rights or obligations that expressly survive. Those are governed by the acceptance or the separate written agreement.

31. Technical requirements

You are responsible for your connection, device, browser, file, successful upload, account information, and payment before the deadline.

Midas is not responsible for failures beyond its reasonable control, including outages, corrupted or incompatible files, uploads it did not receive, email or spam filtering, payment-network failures, third-party interruptions, or cyberattacks.

If Midas identifies a material technical problem in systems it controls, it may extend a deadline, reopen an upload window, or let an affected submission be completed. That does not create a general right to a refund.

32. Communications

You must keep an accurate email address and monitor competition messages, including spam or junk folders. Midas may communicate electronically.

If you do not respond within a reasonably stated deadline about eligibility, finalist acceptance, grand prize acceptance, verification, or prize administration, you may lose that opportunity. Midas is not responsible for messages that cannot be delivered because of contact information you supplied or systems outside its reasonable control.

33. Disqualification

Midas may disqualify an entrant or submission for a material violation, including material that is not original, an adaptation or project based on pre-existing intellectual property, false eligibility information, plagiarism, knowing copyright infringement, fraudulent authorship, lack of co-writer authority, payment fraud, manipulation of competition systems, harassment or threats, attempts to improperly influence judging, impersonation, malicious files, unlawful conduct affecting the Competition, material misrepresentation, or violation of a separately accepted competition agreement.

Where reasonably practicable, Midas may seek clarification first. Disqualification does not entitle you to a refund.

34. Conflicts involving judges or readers

Midas may take reasonable steps to avoid known material conflicts. If it identifies one, it may reassign the submission, disregard an affected evaluation, obtain another evaluation, or take another reasonable administrative action.

Ordinary professional connections in the entertainment industry are not automatically a disqualifying conflict.

35. Modification, suspension, or cancellation

Midas may reasonably modify, suspend, extend, postpone, or cancel all or part of a cycle if events beyond its reasonable control materially interfere with fair or safe administration, including technical failures, security incidents, fraud, legal requirements, disasters, platform failures, insufficient eligible submissions, or force majeure.

Midas will not materially alter competition terms after entry merely to deprive you of rights already earned. If a material change affects existing entrants, Midas will use reasonable efforts to communicate it and determine an appropriate response.

If Midas cancels the cycle you entered, or cancels the category you entered, before final results for it are announced, Midas will refund in full the entry fees you paid for the cancelled entries. Refunds go to the original payment method within 30 days after the cancellation is announced. You do not need to ask for this refund.

Except as stated above or where required by applicable law, modification, suspension, extension, or postponement does not create a right to a refund.

36. Privacy

Personal information and submitted material are handled under the Privacy Policy, these Rules, and any Coverage Services terms you accept. That policy is incorporated by reference to the extent it applies to competition administration.

Where these Rules specifically govern intellectual-property ownership or competition-created exclusivity, these Rules control over inconsistent general website language.

37. Indemnification

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Midas Management Group Inc., Midas Entertainment Group Inc., and their affiliates, officers, directors, employees, contractors, judges, readers, representatives, successors, and assigns from third-party claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and reasonable attorneys' fees arising from your material breach of these Rules or of a representation in them, a claim that you did not create, own, control, or have authority to submit the material, a claim that the material unlawfully infringes a third party's rights, or your fraud or unlawful conduct in connection with the Competition.

This does not require you to indemnify Midas for Midas's own unlawful copying of protectable expression, fraud, willful misconduct, or other liability that cannot legally be shifted to you.

38. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Midas and its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, contractors, judges, readers, representatives, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential damages arising solely from participation in the Competition, including lost profits or lost business opportunities, except where such a limitation is prohibited by law.

Nothing in these Rules excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing eliminates your rights concerning actual unlawful copying of legally protectable expression.

To the extent permitted by law, monetary liability arising solely from ordinary competition administration is limited to the competition entry fees you actually paid for the submission giving rise to the claim. This cap does not apply where applicable law prohibits it.

The limits in this section do not apply to: unauthorized disclosure or use of your submitted material or personal information caused by the negligence, gross negligence, or willful misconduct of Midas or its contractors, including a failure to use reasonable security; a refund or prize Midas owes under these Rules; fraud or willful misconduct; or personal injury.

39. No guarantee of an industry result

The Competition is intended to identify and recognize storytelling. Midas does not represent or guarantee that entering or advancing will result in employment, representation, management, production, financing, distribution, a sale or option, attached talent, introductions, career advancement, or a financial return.

Any later opportunity depends on separate circumstances, negotiations, creative decisions, financing, third-party decisions, and, where applicable, a separate written agreement.

40. Electronic acceptance

Registration, submission, acceptance of these Rules, and related transactions may be conducted electronically. Checking an unchecked box, or another affirmative electronic acceptance, is your acceptance.

Midas may keep records of the version accepted, the date and time, the account, the submission, and the transaction. You agree that an electronic record may be used to demonstrate agreement, subject to applicable law.

Finalist status and grand prize winner status require a separate affirmative electronic or written acceptance. They are not accepted merely because you previously accepted these Rules.

41. Order of documents

Account creation is governed by the website Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Competition entry is governed by these Rules. AI Coverage and Professional Human Coverage are governed by the Coverage Services terms and the acceptance for that purchase. Finalist status and grand prize winner status require their own acceptances.

If a specific agreement conflicts with a more general website term about that same transaction, the more specific agreement controls to the extent of the conflict.

42. Governing law

These Rules and disputes arising from or relating to the Competition are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

43. Dispute resolution

Any legal action or proceeding arising out of or relating to these Rules or the Competition that is not otherwise required by law to be brought elsewhere shall be brought exclusively in the appropriate state or federal court located in Los Angeles County, California, and the parties consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.

44. Severability

If a provision is held unlawful, invalid, or unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted or severed. The remaining provisions stay in effect unless applicable law requires otherwise.

45. No waiver

A failure to enforce a provision in one instance does not waive the right to enforce it later. A waiver must be express to be effective.

46. Headings

Section titles are for convenience and do not change the meaning of these Rules.

47. Entire competition agreement

These Rules, together with the incorporated Privacy Policy and any other terms expressly incorporated, are the agreement for your participation in the applicable cycle. They supersede prior statements about competition entry to the extent those statements conflict.

They do not supersede a separately accepted finalist acceptance, grand prize winner acceptance, Coverage Services terms, or a later written development, option, acquisition, production, financing, licensing, shopping, or other agreement.

48. Changes to these Rules

Midas may update these Rules for future cycles. The version you affirmatively accept at entry governs that entry, subject to lawful administrative corrections, changes required by law, changes reasonably necessary for unforeseen administration issues, and any later agreement you separately accept.

The effective date of these Rules is October 7, 2026.
